The historic date of July 24 marks a turning point in the fate of one of the oldest Bulgarian cities – Nesebar, which once bore the name Messembria. On this day in 1829, Russian military units overcome the defensive fortifications and officially liberate the settlement from Ottoman rule.

The city, whose history dates back about 3,200 years, has passed through different civilizational eras – from the Thracian Melsambriya, through the Greek Messembria and Roman rule, to the medieval Messemvriya. This day marks its final integration into the Bulgarian statehood and the beginning of its revival.

The post-liberation period transforms the once-deserted settlement into a significant cultural and tourist center. Nesebar gradually begins to restore its identity, preserving remarkable architectural monuments from different historical periods.

Local authorities and the community traditionally mark this memorable day through various cultural events. The Archaeological Museum presents exhibitions that trace the city's evolution through the centuries, organizing reconstructions, concerts, and thematic exhibitions.

Nesebar gained international recognition, being included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 1983. The city is famous for over 40 historical churches and remarkable architectural monuments that define it as the "Bulgarian Ravenna".

Today, July 24 serves as a symbolic reminder of the resilience and spirit of this ancient city. Local residents and numerous tourists have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich centuries-old history of Nesebar, which continues to inspire and enchant its visitors.
