The state enterprise "National Electricity Company" (NEK) takes a significant step towards transparency in the energy sector by launching full-scale trading of guarantees of origin through the Bulgarian Independent Energy Exchange (BIEE).
Starting from August 2025, the company will conduct auctions for the sale of guarantees of origin, being officially registered as an active participant in the specialized market segment. Interested enterprises can view the available products directly on the BIEE platform.
NEK is establishing itself as a leading national player in the sector, taking a leading position in acquired guarantees of origin in Bulgaria. Through its partnership with BIEE, the company aims to ensure maximum liquidity and transparency of the market segment.
Experts from the Bulgarian Stock Exchange emphasize that this move is part of broader efforts to develop the liberalized electricity market. The initiative is being implemented in close cooperation with the Sustainable Energy Development Agency (SEDA).
Guarantees of origin are electronic documents that certify the origin of electricity from renewable sources. They contain detailed information about the production technology and geographical location of energy facilities.
The European context of the initiative is related to Directive (EU) 2018/2001, known as RED II, which sets the ambitious goal of having at least 32% of consumed energy from renewable sources by 2030.
The guarantees market was officially opened on March 31, with BIEE beginning to register participants wishing to sell and buy green energy certificates. This step is seen as a key moment in the transition to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sector.
The growing interest of European companies in green electricity further confirms the importance of such market mechanisms to promote clean technologies.
