Education minister professor Georgi Valchev has congratulated teachers on October 5, World Teachers' Day, in a message posted on the education ministry's website.

Valchev says the knowledge, values and confidence teachers give children stay with them for years after kindergarten and the school classroom.

"You teach them to think for themselves, to look for solutions, and you give them the confidence to follow their own path," the minister says. With support and personal example, teachers help children discover their abilities and grow more curious.

"Every success a student achieves carries a piece of your effort, patience and dedication," Valchev writes. He thanked teachers for their professionalism and sense of responsibility and wished them health, strength, satisfaction and inspiration.

More than 92,000 teaching staff work in Bulgaria's schools and kindergartens, over 20,000 of them in kindergartens, the education ministry's press office said at the start of the 2026/2027 school year. About one in five is under 35, and the ministry says the rise in young teachers in recent years is a welcome trend.

More than 100 countries around the world mark the day. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) set the date in 1994 to honour teachers' contribution to the development of society.

Bulgaria has marked the day since 2006, following decision No. 697 of the Council of Ministers from September 29 of that year.
