Bulgaria's health ministry will check health spending in all 28 regions, health minister Katya Ivkova said at a prosecutors' briefing in Plovdiv. The checks follow the discovery of a scheme to siphon money from the National Health Insurance Fund.
The Executive Agency for Medical Supervision, regional health inspectorates and the Bulgarian Drug Agency will take part. Ivkova said the checks should confirm that health money is spent correctly and that patients get good treatment.
"These checks matter if we want good health care and safe treatment for patients," the minister said.
The ministry and the state company Information Services are finishing work on the eZdrave mobile app, which will let patients check how much was spent on their treatment and report any mismatch. Reports will go to the National Health Information System, where artificial intelligence will review them, with an on-the-spot check if needed.
