A motorcyclist and a cyclist collided at about 1:13pm on Saturday, 10 October, at the junction of Struga and Dame Gruev streets in Burgas, the regional Interior Ministry directorate said. Police say both men entered the junction when the lights told them to stop.
The motorcyclist is 29. He was riding a Honda with Burgas plates straight ahead, towards the Burgas university hospital. He went through on an amber light, which also means stop.
The cyclist is 39. He was crossing at the pedestrian and cycle crossing on a red light, moving from right to left across the motorcyclist's path. Their paths met at the junction and they collided.
The traffic lights were working normally, police said.
Both men are from Burgas and went to hospital on their own for checks. The motorcyclist has a bruised chest and the cyclist has a broken nose. Doctors examined them. Neither needed to stay in hospital, and both are recovering at home.
The area around Dame Gruev has drawn attention before because of traffic light violations. The author of one recording gave the registration numbers and said he had reported the case to the authorities. That case is not linked to Saturday's crash, but it also involves drivers ignoring the lights on the boulevard.
There have been accidents at the junction of Struga and Dame Gruev in earlier years too. On 29 June 2019, a taxi and a Mercedes collided there and one person was lightly injured. The causes given at the time included failure to give way and high speed, and the first reports did not say exactly how the crash happened.
