The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) proposes integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into all subjects in Bulgarian schools. This is part of a project to optimize education in general education, published for public discussion. The goal is for students to acquire skills for the rational use of AI and to develop competencies for the professions of the future.
The changes cover all subjects from the third to the 12th grade, with the exception of physical education and sports. For example, in Bulgarian language and literature, students will be able to check the factual correctness of information from AI, compare abstracts, and analyze the style of AI-generated text. In mathematics, AI will be used to assess the logical correctness of solutions, and in geography - to summarize geographical information.
In the initial stage, the focus is on familiarization with AI, and in the lower secondary stage - on searching for information and critical analysis. In the eighth grade, computer science expands its scope, including AI not only as a tool, but also as an object of study.
The changes, if approved, will come into effect from the 2026/2027 school year, with teachers undergoing training. The MES emphasizes that AI will be used as a means of supporting the cognitive process, and not as its substitute. The leading role of the teacher remains crucial.
The proposals are part of a comprehensive change aimed at the functionality of knowledge and its application in real life. The MES has already published concepts for new curricula and a vision for the use of AI in education, with an emphasis on critical thinking and responsible behavior in a digital environment.
