Bulgaria is drafting a new law to clean up the air. The Ministry of Environment and Water is updating current air laws to meet new EU rules. Environment Minister Rositsa Karamfilova said this in response to a question from Tatiana Sultanova-Siveva of the «We Continue the Change» party.

The minister said work on the law should finish as soon as possible. However, she is worried about the December deadline to adopt the EU rules. Karamfilova said she warned about the risk of missing this deadline on her very first day in office.

The minister said the country will create air quality roadmaps for the first time. The data needed for these plans will be ready in the first half of 2027. The final plans must be finished by the end of 2028.

The ministry will include different groups while it writes the new rules, such as:

Participants will work under current laws. Karamfilova added she will decide if more groups need to join if help is required.

The minister also said she is working on a new program to improve air quality. She reminded people that the EU rules require the new air standards to be met by 2030. This means the ministry has a lot of work to do.
