On August 8, the world community marks International Cat Day – an event that goes beyond an ordinary holiday and becomes a powerful mechanism for social change. Created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), this day has become a platform for raising public awareness about cat care.

Bulgarian reality presents a unique context of relationships between people and cats. Our streets, parks, and homes are inhabited by numerous four-legged residents who have become an integral part of the urban ecosystem. Organizations and volunteer groups work hard to improve the conditions and status of these animals.

Educational campaigns are gaining increasing popularity, with their main focus falling on several key areas: sterilization, vaccination, health care, and responsible adoption. Social networks are becoming a powerful tool for spreading messages through hashtags like #AdoptACat and #CatDay.

Cities like Burgas, Plovdiv, and Sofia demonstrate remarkable examples of coordination between local authorities, veterinary clinics, shelters, and civic associations. They create models for effective management of stray cat populations and improving their well-being.

Statistical data eloquently show that responsible attitudes directly affect the number of abandoned animals. The more the community invests in education and care, the more significant the positive results are for cats and society as a whole.

The August period is a symbolic moment for adoption. Many Bulgarian families choose this month to give a home to a new four-legged friend, while simultaneously raising their children in a spirit of empathy and care for animals.

International Cat Day goes beyond simple celebration – it represents a large-scale movement to change attitudes and create a more humane society. Every smile, every outstretched hand to a needy animal is a step towards a better world.
