Bulgaria's Consumer Protection Commission (KZP) fined three shops from two big retail chains a total of €75,000 at its meeting on 29 October for unfair trading practices.

Each fine is the maximum the law allows.

Checks at the first chain on 22 and 25 October found that the shelf price of the same product differed from the price at the till. Some fruit and vegetables also carried the wrong country of origin.

At the second chain, a check on 22 October found products whose shelf price differed from the price charged at the till.

The fines rest on reports under the "Unfair commercial practices" section of the Consumer Protection Act.

At the same meeting, the commission also penalised other traders. Some breaches involved imitation products, and others involved flyers from eateries with misleading information. Tour operators, tourist sites and a hotel were punished for fake "last-minute" offers with promotional prices and for charging fuel surcharges for trips. One trader was penalised for a breach over a customer's early repayment of a loan.

This month KZP has fined various chains more than €110,000 in total for unfair and misleading practices.

On 20 October, commission chair Maya Manolova announced 11 cases over unjustified price rises for cheese, milk, tomatoes, cucumbers and other basic goods. The commission is comparing October prices with those in August. In the cases, the chains can show that the rises were justified.
