Space once again demonstrated its unpredictability when on July 17, 2025, an asteroid with the code name 2022 YS5 passed through the near orbit of Earth, causing increased interest among the astronomical community.
The object, whose diameter is approximately 30 meters - comparable to the size of an average residential building - flew at an impressive distance of 3.8 million kilometers from our planet. The speed of the wandering celestial stone exceeded the impressive 33,000 kilometers per hour.
Experts from NASA and the Indian Space Agency ISRO emphasized the exceptional importance of such observations. Monitoring potentially dangerous asteroids is becoming a critical element of the global planetary defense strategy.
This incident gains additional significance in view of the upcoming passage of asteroid Apophis in 2029, which puts the international scientific community in a state of heightened readiness.
Although the risk of collision was minimal, the event reinforces the need for continuous improvement of early warning and tracking systems for space objects.
