The marine spaces around Sydney are turning into a natural migration corridor, which during the summer months of 2025 creates significant logistical challenges for urban water transport. Approximately 40,000 humpback whales pass between the cold Antarctic waters and the warm coastlines of Queensland, transforming the area into an extremely busy natural route.

Researchers from Macquarie University are conducting an in-depth study of whale presence in an urban environment. Their scientific observation reveals interesting aspects of interaction between marine inhabitants and urban infrastructure, with the focus falling on safety and ecological parameters.

Commercial ferries are forced to take special preventive measures – reducing speed and adapting routes to ensure the safe passage of whale populations. This causes both logistical challenges and increased public interest in marine migrations.

The scientific aspect of observation includes detailed tracking of population health, pollution levels, and anthropogenic impact on the marine ecosystem. At the same time, Sydney residents and tourists have the unique opportunity to become direct witnesses to this impressive natural phenomenon.
