Chinese Calligraphy in Burgas: A New Start for Cultural Initiatives at Sofia University

The Burgas branch of Sofia University launched a series of events dedicated to China, with a demonstration of calligraphy. The visit of a Chinese calligrapher and a workshop with students from the specialty "Methods of Foreign Language Teaching - Chinese" was a highlight of the program. The branch is expanding its portfolio with new bachelor's programs in Eastern languages.

With a demonstration of supreme calligraphic art, led by an authoritative lecturer from China, the Burgas branch of Sofia University launched a new cultural initiative.

The visit of Gao Hongjun, a member of the Beijing Calligraphers Association, became the culmination of the first in a series of events dedicated to China. The branch will present various aspects of Eastern culture in specially prepared meetings every month until the end of May.

A highlight of the program of the first event was the symbolism of the New Year according to the traditional Chinese calendar. The start was given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Antonia Tsankova, Deputy Director of the Branch and Head of the bachelor's program with Chinese language in Burgas.

Guest lecturer Bai Xue contributed to the authentic narrative, revealing to the audience the aesthetics and customs of the most important Eastern holiday. The workshop of master Gao Hongjun also aroused enormous interest.

Under his guidance, students from the first class of the specialty “Methodology of Foreign Language Teaching - Chinese Language”, students and language lovers wrote their first holiday wishes on red paper, mastering the rhythm and art of ancient calligraphy.

The branch of Sofia University in Burgas will expand its portfolio with new bachelor's programs in the 2025/2026 academic year, aimed at preparing highly qualified specialists with Eastern languages:
