Strong support for the EU and strategic autonomy
At a meeting with ambassadors from EU member states, Vice President Iliana Iotova emphasized that Bulgaria is not changing its choice – the European Union. A major focus of the discussion was the security challenges and the need for a consolidated European position.
"Europe must build a common and comprehensive security and defense policy, strengthening its pillar within NATO," noted Iotova.
Priorities: Energy, industry, and technology
- Energy security: Bulgaria is developing key projects such as the Vertical Gas Corridor for supply diversification.
- Industrial production: Iotova called for better coordination between member states to overcome economic crises.
- Artificial intelligence: Bulgaria is among the six selected countries for the construction of an AI gigafactory, which is a key priority for future development.
Position on budgetary frameworks and enlargement
Regarding the Multiannual Financial Framework, Iotova expressed reservations about merging agricultural and cohesion policies, insisting on maintaining a balance between financial stability and the leveling of living standards. Regarding the enlargement of the EU, she was categorical that every country must meet the membership criteria, referring to the Republic of North Macedonia and the need to protect human rights.
