Vice President Iliana Iotova promised representatives of the media that she would not turn the Consultative Council on National Security into an arena for an election campaign. Her comment came in response to calls from GERB, Democratic Bulgaria, and We Continue the Change, who insisted yesterday that the head of state convene the aforementioned Consultative Council.

The tension was sparked by events related to Germany after the federal government accused Russia of a failed drone attack involving explosives at the Leipzig/Halle Airport. Following the incident, authorities in Berlin imposed a series of retaliatory restrictions, including the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn, the termination of the contract with the "Russian House" cultural institute in Berlin, and the introduction of additional sanction measures.

Iotova clarified that the Consultative Council on National Security is an institutional format that brings together political parties, specialized services, and state bodies with the sole purpose of formulating and proposing specific policies to other institutions. She emphasized that the current situation could be managed using the existing tools available to the National Assembly, while noting that such cases fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
