Wholesale food prices keep rising, tomatoes jump 16.83%

The wholesale price index rose 0.82% in a week. Tomatoes went up the most, while type 500 flour fell 10.03%.

Wholesale prices of basic foods in Bulgaria rose 0.82% last week, according to the weekly analysis by the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets (SCCEM).

The commission tracks prices with a wholesale market price index. This week it stands at 2.343 points, up from 2.324 the week before. The index base is 2005, when its value was 1.000 points.

Tomatoes rose the most, by 16.83%, and now cost €1.86 a kg. The biggest fall was in type 500 flour, which dropped 10.03% to €0.61/kg.

Among vegetables, green peppers are up 14.99% at €1.12/kg, while red peppers are up 3.54% at €1.23/kg. Courgettes rose 4.46% to €0.89/kg. A kilogram of dry onions costs €0.59 after a 2.79% rise.

Other vegetables got cheaper. Lettuce fell the most, by 6.76%, to €0.69/kg. Carrots dropped 5.49% to €0.62/kg, and cucumbers are down 5.18% at €1.50/kg. Potatoes are now €0.59 a kg, down 4.84%, and cabbage is down 2.83% at €0.55/kg.

Apples are the only fruit that rose in price, up 6.4% to €1.13/kg. Grapes are down 6.16% at €1.28/kg. Lemons fell 3.8% to €1.52/kg, and bananas fell 2.03% to €1.45/kg.

Among staple foods, rice rose 5% to €1.68/kg, sugar rose 2.17% to €0.94/kg, and cooking oil rose 1.64% to €1.74 a litre. Dry beans sell for €2.10 a kg after a 0.76% fall, and lentils are at €2.02 after a 0.2% fall.

Most dairy products got dearer, but butter got cheaper. Cow's-milk white cheese is up 0.23% at €6.13/kg, and Vitosha kashkaval is up 0.15% at €9.50/kg. A 400-gram tub of yoghurt with 3% fat or more rose 1.39% to €0.73. A litre of fresh milk sells for €1.21, up 0.67%. A 125-gram pack of cow's butter is down 4.53% at €1.35 each.

Frozen chicken rose 0.9% to €3.60/kg. Size M eggs are unchanged at €0.19 each wholesale.
