A sharp confrontation between a border police officer and an illegal migrant occurred this evening in the border area of Zvezdets, during which the officer was forced to use a firearm in self-defense.
Around 9:00 PM, a group of approximately 20 Moroccan migrants attempted to illegally enter Bulgaria and the territory of the European Union. A patrol from the General Directorate of Border Police took action to detain them.
During the operation, part of the group tried to escape, with one of the Moroccans directly attacking the border officer. The police officer initially fired warning shots into the air, but due to the continuing aggression, he was forced to shoot at the attacker.
The migrant was hit in the shoulder and immediately transported for medical assistance to a hospital in Burgas. The Ministry of Interior confirmed the incident but postponed providing additional details until the next day.
The incident highlights the growing challenge for Bulgarian border officers in dealing with illegal migration and the risks they face daily.
