General Atanas Atanasov, co-chairman of the political formation "Democratic Bulgaria", expressed a categorical opinion regarding the activities of the Anti-Corruption Commission during a television broadcast on BNT. The politician described the institution as ineffective and harmful to the democratic processes in the country.
In his statement, the expert emphasized that the commission focuses mainly on discrediting opposition circles, rather than on the real fight against corruption practices. Atanasov insisted on urgent legislative steps aimed at completely closing down this state body.
According to the political leader, there are alternative institutions that can take over the functions of prevention and counteraction of corruption schemes. Among them, he listed the economic police, the State Anti-Corruption Commission, and the criminal police as more effective structures.
Atanasov firmly stated that the current commission is used as an instrument of political pressure. In his opinion, the ruling party usurps the repressive state apparatus, turning it into a mechanism for suppressing the political opposition.
The general's statement caused a serious public resonance, putting into question the legitimacy and independence of the Prevention and Coordination Commission. His sharp criticism draws attention to the need for institutional reforms in the anti-corruption system.
