Long-term solutions to the budget deficit
Measures to curb the budget deficit must be of a lasting nature, stated Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Galab Donev during the parliamentary question time. According to him, the country cannot rely on one-off actions that yield results only for a short period.
"There is no way we can get by with one-off measures that have an effect in 2026, and then have to look for similar solutions again," emphasized Donev.
European Commission requirements
The Finance Minister noted that the European Commission will not accept measures with a temporary effect. Brussels insists on sustainable policies that guarantee fiscal stability in the long term.
Key conclusions:
- The problem: The budgets for 2023, 2024, and 2025 relied on one-off measures.
- Consequence: The lack of long-term reforms led to the current excessive deficit.
- Goal: The government aims to submit the state budget for the current year to the National Assembly by the end of June.
Donev categorically stated that previous governments failed to take the necessary steps for structural changes, which necessitates urgent action now.
