Europe is facing an era of unprecedented challenges, characterized by growing threats and confrontations that question the very foundations of democratic values and the security of NATO member countries. At the heart of these turbulent times remains a firm belief in democratic principles as Europe's strongest weapon. This fundamental concept united the participants in a forum dedicated to defense and democracy, held in the capital.
Within a specialized panel, entitled "Why We Fight", the topic of the continent's security was subjected to critical analysis. Key figures participated in the discussion, including the Deputy Spokesperson of NATO, as well as the former Minister of Defense and the Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to NATO.
The atmosphere in the hall was charged with tension as participants tried to understand the challenges facing Europe. "We live in an era of confrontation, in which our values and democracy are being tested," emphasized the Deputy Spokesperson of NATO. She stressed that Russia poses the "most immediate and lasting threat" to the security of the Alliance. Highlighting the importance of an adequate response, she pointed to hybrid attacks and aggression against Ukraine as proof that the danger is far from over.
The former Minister of Defense emphasized the key role of public resilience and preparation for possible crises. He stressed that the better prepared societies are, the less likely military actions are. In the context of internal challenges, he sharply addressed the issue of disinformation, which "divides Bulgarian society and undermines trust in institutions". He added that the country must focus its efforts on strengthening critical defense infrastructure, including air and missile defense, as well as strengthening security in the Black Sea and developing military infrastructure and mobility.
The Deputy Spokesperson of NATO pointed out that aid to Ukraine is a key element in ensuring stability in Europe. "Ukraine's security is our security," she categorically stated. She added that the Alliance continues to invest in innovation, new technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance the defense capabilities of its members. According to her, it is not only necessary to invest more in defense, but these investments must be more reasonable and aimed at innovations that guarantee the security of societies.
The Deputy Spokesperson of NATO noted that the Alliance is able to defend itself and that it has undergone a serious transformation since 2014, including through an increased presence on the Eastern flank and the deployment of forces. "Today we are stronger and more prepared than ever," she emphasized.
