A key call for transformation of the European defense industry was made yesterday by Ursula von der Leyen, reacting to the changed international military-political situation. The leader of the European Commission emphasized the need for a radical rethinking of the continental defense strategy.
In an official statement, she emphasized the SAFE initiative, which provides for large-scale investment injections of up to 150 billion euros in the sector. The financial instrument is aimed at two main directions: direct military support for Ukraine and systematic strengthening of the European military-industrial complex.
Von der Leyen highlighted the European Union's previous contribution, which has already provided around 50 billion euros in military aid. The efforts of Denmark were specially highlighted, including deliveries of modern artillery systems and F-16 fighter jets.
The key message of the high-ranking politician was a categorical call to member states to intensify their collective defense efforts. "We must increase our own support and expand European arms production," she said in the context of the temporary suspension of US military aid.
The initiative aims to consolidate European defense potential and reduce dependence on external arms suppliers.
