Drivers over 65 across the European Union will need to pass a psychological test to renew their licence, foreign media report. The new rules apply from January 2024.
Anyone who fails the test loses their licence.
The requirement is part of the Vision Zero project, which aims to make roads safer and cut the number of crashes across Europe.
The test checks whether a driver has trouble concentrating. If there's any doubt about that, they no longer get behind the wheel.
The EU is also working on refresher courses for drivers over 70 — experts say they're the ones most often involved in crashes.
Officials are also looking at shorter renewal periods for older drivers. One proposal would have drivers over 70 renew their licence every five years, with a psychological test every two years.
