Sofia police have detained two people in an operation against vote buying in the capital's Hristo Botev district, the Sofia police directorate (SDVR) said. Checks will continue every day until the run-off for president and vice president.

The detainees are aged 52 and 35. Officers held them at one of the addresses they checked, where they found lists of names with a specific sum of money next to each name.

SDVR said the votes were being bought for one of the candidate pairs for president and vice president, at different prices.

Officers checked 16 addresses, 2 cars and 38 people, and drew up 27 reports.

All district police departments of SDVR are taking part, along with the Gendarmerie directorate. The operation covers the whole of Sofia, and the check in Hristo Botev is only one part of it.

Commissioner Nikolay Peltekov of SDVR said police want to keep people safe and stop anyone from violating their political rights. The aim is for no votes to be bought or sold in the run-off, he said.

Peltekov said this is only the start of the operation.
