Only a few days are left for thousands of people who pay their own health insurance to make the first higher payment of the year – the one for August. The deadline is 25 September 2026.
These are people who are not registered as self-insured under the Social Insurance Code. Most of them are long-term unemployed, get no jobless benefit and are not insured by the state on any other ground. For them, the health insurance payment jumps to 24.81 euros a month from 1 August.
The change comes because of the new minimum insurance income. From 1 August it rises from 550.66 euros to 620.20 euros. Under the Health Insurance Act, people who are not insured on another ground pay a contribution on an income that cannot be less than half that amount – so on 310.10 euros. The rate is 8%, which gives the new figure of 24.81 euros a month.
The maximum insurance income also rises from 1 August, to 2,300 euros. That means the highest health insurance payment anyone can owe is now 184 euros a month.
By law, health insurance payments are due by the 25th of the month after the month they cover. That is why the payment for August must be made by 25 September.
People who owe health insurance payments on their own file a form called "Declaration No. 7" with the tax agency, NRA. They can do this online, using an NRA personal ID code or a qualified electronic signature, which carries the same legal weight as a handwritten one. The declaration can be filed in two ways: through the agency's online services portal or in person at an NRA office. The deadline is the 25th of the month after the month the payment is owed for.
If someone fails to pay more than three monthly payments they owe over a 36-month period – three years – they lose their health insurance rights. That period is counted back from the start of the month before the month in which they got medical care.
To get those rights back, a person must pay all payments owed for the last 60 months – five years back. The rights are restored on the date all the money owed for that period is paid.
