Bulgarians living abroad have until midnight tonight, October 29, to apply online to vote in the presidential election, the Central Election Commission says. They can sign up on the commission's website.
So far more than 32,000 people have applied. Turkey leads with close to 12,000 applications, followed by the UK with almost 5,000, Germany with more than 3,000 and the US with more than 2,300. Spain has sent in 1,700 applications, and the Netherlands almost 1,000.
A polling station needs at least 40 applications to open in one place. Stations get a voting machine once they reach 300 applications or more.
Anyone who has applied is added to the voter list for their polling station and won't need to fill out extra forms on the day. The commission says signing up early makes it easier for people abroad to vote.
The commission will decide where the polling stations go and how many there will be based on the number of applications and figures the foreign ministry sent by October 3.
The latest changes to the Electoral Code scrapped the cap on the number of polling stations in countries outside the European Union. The presidential election is on October 25.
