In the heart of European diplomacy – Brussels, the monthly meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council took place, covering a wide range of geopolitical challenges. The Foreign Ministers of the European Union focused on several key international topics outlining the contemporary foreign policy reality.
The video conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha set the tone for discussions, providing up-to-date information on the current situation in the country. The Bulgarian representative Georg Georgiev decisively emphasized the need to continue sanctions pressure on Russia and full support for Ukraine, with a special focus on the strategic importance of regional security in the Black Sea region.
The humanitarian crisis in the Middle East was another central point on the agenda. Ministers discussed the critical situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, focusing on possibilities for ending the conflict. Georgiev insisted on opening all checkpoints to ensure humanitarian aid, emphasizing the importance of fully releasing Israeli hostages.
Another significant topic was related to the development of democratic processes in Georgia. European diplomats expressed concern about the deterioration of the human rights environment in the country. The Bulgarian Minister firmly stated that the Georgian people deserve a better European future and that specific restrictive measures are necessary against those responsible for suppressing civil rights.
Additionally, ministers discussed the activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding Iran's nuclear commitments, with Bulgaria expressing full support for the institution following the recent regional escalation.
The meeting concluded by examining the future of the Mediterranean Pact and current reforms in the Union for the Mediterranean, continuing the ministerial meeting of July 14, 2025, which united the foreign policy representatives of the EU and countries from the Southern Neighborhood.
