A parliamentary committee has rejected a bill to change the Labour Code for parents on fixed-term contracts. The labour, demographic and social policy committee voted it down at first reading. Galya Vasileva of GERB-SDS and a group of MPs put the bill forward.
Six MPs voted for it, eight against and four abstained.
The authors wanted to strengthen protection for mothers, parents and adoptive parents. They proposed temporary cover for workers on fixed-term contracts. Under the plan, a contract would not end until the worker had used the leave the law gives them. After that, it would end automatically.
Vasileva said the aim was to make sure a mother caring for her child does not lose her benefit before the child turns two just because her fixed-term contract has run out.
