Russia has been waging a full-scale war on Ukraine since February 2022. Four parties, DB, PP, DPS and Vazrazhdane, oppose a text on the attack on grain ships that was discussed at the Consultative Council on National Security (KSNS). It is not clear whether the text was adopted, Nikolay Denkov of We Continue the Change said after the meeting.
Under the council's internal rules, a text is adopted if three-quarters of those present back it. Denkov is waiting for the final version to see whether it has that support. He says the vote carries great weight. A text that passes counts as backed by the council. If it fails, it is only a statement of good intent, and each party sets out its own arguments.
Denkov said Ukraine has no motive to attack these ships, because it needs the exports and the income from them. "It makes no sense for Ukraine to fire on its own ships, which it uses to carry grain from the ports in Romania and Odesa," he said.
He said Ukrainian drones may have been used in the attack after Russian services intercepted and took control of them. He added that this has happened before. Russia has been attacking Ukraine and its ports since February 2022.
His party opposes the text because "we cannot back an approach that keeps shifting the problem from the sick head to the healthy one," Denkov said.
The meeting also discussed who actually carried out the attack. According to Denkov, everyone agreed that the investigation must be completed and its findings made public. He wants to see how the investigation ends. Russia is waging war on Ukraine and striking Ukrainian ports.
