The Demographic Catastrophe – An Assessment of Decades of Failures
On the occasion of World Population Day, "Progressive Bulgaria" MP Ivan Yanev issued a sharp declaration regarding the country's critical demographic state. According to him, demographic policy is not merely a matter of financial aid, but of fundamental economic stability.
"Demographics are the result of policies pursued for decades. The decisions made 30 years ago are bearing fruit exactly today," Yanev stated from the parliamentary rostrum.
Key Facts:
- Bulgaria's population fell to 6,423,207 people by the end of 2025.
- Over the course of a generation, the country has lost more than 2.2 million of its citizens.
- There is a lasting trend of depopulation in regions and the closure of schools and kindergartens.
Yanev emphasized the need to analyze past mistakes – the liquidation of industry and the lack of a strategy in agriculture, which forced entire generations to seek a living outside their hometowns. The MP called for a statesmanlike approach that would restore hope to young people, turning every newborn child into the greatest investment for the future of Bulgaria.
