The National Audit Office will not act on a complaint from interior minister Ivan Demerdzhiev about MP Delyan Peevski's undeclared private flights, the minister said.
Demerdzhiev sent the complaint on 31 July. The office's deputy head, Margarita Nikolova, replied in a letter, which reached him the day after the second round of the presidential election.
Demerdzhiev says the office sees no problem in Peevski's failure to declare the flights, or in the lack of official information on how the trips were paid for. "Millions spent on charter planes for an MP, of unclear origin, are of no interest to the institution run by the former speaker of parliament," the minister said.
The office is headed by Dimitar Glavchev. He was elected in the summer of 2023 with votes from GERB, PP-DB and DPS, for a seven-year term.
The minister reminded reporters that people in senior state posts declare their income so that officials can check whether it matches their standard of living. They must also report cases where another person pays large costs for their benefit.
Demerdzhiev believes the regulators that the "Sglobka" coalition has taken over are quietly doing the job they were appointed for: protecting "their masters". "Sadly, while the interior ministry is working, some institutions are still used as an umbrella!" he added.
Only the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office can challenge the office's decision. Demerdzhiev does not expect it to do so in its current form, so he linked the issue to judicial reform and the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council. He called on people to "keep their fingers crossed" that the new council is chosen soon.
