Yes, Bulgaria co-chairs Bozhidar Bozhanov and Ivaylo Mirchev said on September 30 that Democratic Bulgaria has asked the National Revenue Agency to check the income, companies and property of former acting chief prosecutor Borislav Sarafov and his family.
The party also wants tax audits if the agency finds legal grounds for them. There is no result yet from the tax agency on the tip-off.
Democratic Bulgaria says the check should cover both individuals and companies linked to property purchases and to funding for building projects. By name, the party wants checks on Sarafov's son, Bobi Sarafov, and his former wife, Evgenia Sarafova, whose companies do construction work in Sofia.
"Sarafov and his family are linked to quite a lot of property and construction, and there are reports that family members were given high-paid jobs at companies just on paper," Bozhanov said. He said the tax agency should work out whether this money matches the family's official income, and that the check should also look at how money was misused in the prosecution service and the courts, since that's where the trail leads.
Bobi Sarafov was on a work contract at Elidis OOD on a net salary of 10,000 leva a month in 2022 and 2023, and Union Ivkoni paid him 55,648.24 leva in 2022 and 56,009.91 leva in 2023. Evgenia Sarafova was paid 6,000 leva a month net by Elidis in 2022 and 10,000 leva a month in 2023, and got 54,515.92 leva from Union Ivkoni in 2022 and 56,039.91 leva in 2023.
In its report, Democratic Bulgaria asks what work was actually done for this money to be paid, and whether the income was enough to cover the property deals and construction investments that followed.
Special prosecutor Daniela Taleva refused to open a criminal case over the high pay given to Sarafov's relatives, arguing that simply being paid a salary is not a crime. The paperwork on these payments went through her. Her rulings referred to an earlier audit of Bobi Sarafov and cross-checks on his parents, which found no gap between the income they declared and the property they had.
The party does not point to any proven wrongdoing yet, but is calling for a new, wider check into the deals, companies and building projects that followed. When Sarafov resigned in April 2026, Yes, Bulgaria had already asked for a check on his assets.
Under the tip-off, the tax agency should compare declared income, assets, spending and money transfers, and open audit proceedings if it finds legal grounds to do so.
