The large-scale nature conservation initiative LIFE Rhodope Vulture marked a significant success with the start of the black vulture (Aegypius monachus) breeding season on August 1, 2025. The ecological project, implemented jointly by BSPB, Rewilding Rhodopes Foundation and European partners, achieved impressive results.
Between February and July, over 20 specimens of the endangered species were released, with the first breeding pairs already established in mountain areas. Field observations confirm extremely promising data on the birds' reproductive activity in the Blue Stones and Kotel Ridge regions.
Project experts express confidence that black vultures are successfully recovering their population in Bulgarian mountains. Monitoring shows that some pairs are already incubating eggs, which is a key indicator of the species' stabilization in its natural habitat.
