Four people died in a head-on crash between two cars on the road between Yasen and Pleven at about 10.50pm on 8 October. The speedometer of the car that crossed into the oncoming lane was stuck at 139 km/h, Pleven prosecutors told a briefing today.
Prosecutors say the car crossed into the oncoming lane and over the central reservation for reasons that are still unclear. It flipped on the reservation and landed roof-first on the other car, so the two cars hit roof to roof. The road there has a left bend and a slight slope.
The dead are the 18-year-old driver of the oncoming car, who was in his own lane, his 21-year-old passenger, and the two people in the car that crossed over.
Both drivers and their front-seat passengers wore seat belts. Only one rear-seat passenger did not, and prosecutors did not say which car he was in. A preliminary test on the driver who caused the crash found no alcohol or drugs. So far there are no witnesses.
Prosecutors cited the report on the examination of the crash scene, which starts the investigation. The examination ended at 10.50am today, and an expert assessment will be ordered.
