As part of an innovative health strategy, Bulgaria is taking decisive action to limit the spread of human papillomavirus (HPV) by introducing a large-scale national immunization campaign.

The new primary prevention program covers the period 2025-2030 and provides free vaccination for adolescents of both sexes. Target groups include girls between 10 and 15 years old and boys between 10 and 14 years old, with immunizations to be performed by general practitioners, pediatricians, and gynecologists.

Epidemiological data reveal an extremely alarming statistic: HPV is responsible for 5% of all oncological diseases worldwide. The virus causes various types of cancer, with cervical cancer being the most common.

European statistics are clear - approximately 67,500 HPV-related cancer cases are diagnosed annually in member states. Of these, about 33,000 are new cervical cancer cases, with 15,000 ending fatally.

Scientific research conclusively proves the effectiveness of the vaccination strategy. In immunized individuals, the risk of oncological diseases decreases by an impressive 80%. Leading countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom are already reporting a drastic reduction in morbidity.

The national program provides for two main stages of vaccination. The first dose will be available for girls between 10 and 15 years old and boys between 10 and 14 years old. The second dose will be administered to girls up to 16 years old and boys up to 15 years old, with a recommended interval of 6 to 12 months.

Medical experts emphasize that vaccination is the most effective method for preventing potentially life-threatening HPV-related diseases. The campaign aims not only to treat but also to provide comprehensive prevention of oncological risks among the younger generation.

Additional information about the immunization program can be obtained from the specialized website of the Ministry of Health, which provides comprehensive guidance for all interested citizens.
