Banks make 1.4bn-euro profit by end of August, up 11.3% on year

Bulgaria's banks held assets worth 121bn euros at the end of August, and household loans grew by 548m euros over the month, the Bulgarian National Bank says.

Bulgaria's banks made a profit of 1.4 billion euros by the end of August, up 11.3% on a year earlier, the Bulgarian National Bank says.

The banking system held assets worth 121 billion euros at the end of the month, up 568 million euros, or 0.5%, from the end of July.

The liquidity coverage ratio rose from 239.3% on 31 July 2026 to 257.7% at the end of August. The regulator requires a minimum of 100%.

Total gross loans and advances fell to 80.6 billion euros, down 836 million euros, or 1%, on the month. Claims on credit institutions stood at 8.5 billion euros, down 1.6 billion euros, or 15.5%.

The gross loan portfolio reached 72 billion euros, up 733 million euros, or 1%. Households owed banks 548 million euros more, up 1.6%, with 346 million euros of that rise coming from home loans.

Loans to non-financial companies rose by 147 million euros, or 0.5%, and loans to other financial companies rose by 53 million euros, or 1%. Loans to government fell by 14 million euros, or 1.1%.

Bank deposits reached 100.8 billion euros after growing by 191 million euros, or 0.2%, in August. Company deposits rose by 1.2 billion euros, or 4.2%, and household deposits by 397 million euros, or 0.7%. Deposits from credit institutions fell by 1.2 billion euros, or 13.6%. Government deposits fell by 70 million euros, or 2.9%, and deposits from other financial companies fell by 60 million euros, or 2.6%.

Impairment charges on financial assets not measured at fair value through profit or loss stood at 331 million euros at the end of August 2026, up 118 million euros, or 55.3%, from 31 August 2025.
