Bulgaria, as a full member of the Schengen area, remains committed to its role in ensuring the common security of the European Union. This was assured by the Minister of Interior, Daniel Mitov, in the capital, where the international conference "Bulgaria in Schengen" was held.

The event was part of a series of initiatives organized by the European Union (EU) on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Schengen Agreement.

The atmosphere in the hall was filled with anticipation and confidence. Attendees, including officials, discussed the challenges and opportunities that membership in Schengen offers.

Minister Mitov emphasized that in the context of our membership in Schengen, guaranteeing internal security, as well as border security, remains a leading priority. "After the removal of controls on internal borders, we are applying a full range of compensatory measures, thanks to which we do not record changes in crime levels", he noted. In November, Bulgaria is to be subjected to its first periodic assessment under Schengen, now in its capacity as a full member. "We expect positive results, which will demonstrate the excellent preparedness of the employees for the application of Schengen legislation", the minister said.

Bulgaria has invested significant resources in improving border security, including the modernization of equipment, technical infrastructure, and information and communication systems. Minister Mitov also noted the positive impact of Schengen on economic development, the transport sector, and tourism, as well as the facilitation of the movement of goods and the promotion of Bulgaria as an attractive tourist destination. According to him, these positive developments will have a long-term effect and will increase over time.

The impact of the Schengen Agreement is undeniable. It marked the beginning of unprecedented cooperation in the history of the continent, creating a common space without borders. "Schengen is the brightest symbol of European unity, trust, and solidarity", the Interior Minister emphasized. He also focused on the shared responsibility for the protection of external borders, the fight against crime and terrorism, as well as the countering of illegal migration. Bulgaria's membership in Schengen brings tangible benefits to citizens and to the entire European Union, Minister Mitov added.
