Bulgaria's food safety agency (BABH) has shut two sites after 2,513 checks at places where children and students eat. The nationwide campaign ran from 14 September to 14 October 2026, the agency said.
A school canteen in Pazardzhik and a snack workshop in Haskovo were closed over poor hygiene.
The checks were in addition to the usual inspections. Inspectors visited children's venues, school canteens and buffets, food businesses covered by the Food Act, and catering firms that supply kindergartens and schools.
They stopped the sale of 298 kg of food, both of animal and non-animal origin. BABH drew up 18 penalty notices over food that does not meet the rules for feeding children and students.
Some products had problems with markings and labels, and in places food had been kept past its storage time. Inspectors also found hygiene breaches, gaps in food safety paperwork, and no proof that surfaces that touch food are cleaned and disinfected.
The agency issued 152 orders to fix faults in buildings and production equipment.
Anyone who suspects unsafe food can report it to the BABH hotline on 0700 122 99 or through the contact form on the agency's website.
BABH is also starting joint checks with the Consumer Protection Commission and the National Revenue Agency at the warehouses of big retail chains across Bulgaria.
