A van's rear wheel sank into a collapsed stretch of road on Graf Ignatiev Street in central Burgas this afternoon. A witness who sent photos from the scene said a sudden water main burst caused it.
The vehicle is a company van with advertising on its sides, used to carry banitsa pastries. Its back wheel dropped into a hollow under the road. The road around the van has caved in, and the ground under the wheel is partly unsupported. The surface looks normal from the side, but a deep hole has opened right under the wheel.
The driver could not get the van out on his own. Any move risked pushing the wheel deeper and causing more damage to the vehicle.
A "spider" tow truck pulled the van out. It was moved safely before the hole could widen, and the spot was cleared for emergency crews who are fixing the burst pipe and securing the site.
Drivers should take extra care in the area and follow the signs.
