Professor Alexander Tomov, who heads the "Bulgarian Social Democracy – EuroLeft" party, has officially announced his participation in the upcoming presidential elections on October 25. His decision was prompted by an invitation from a large group of Bulgarian public figures, scholars, as well as prominent figures in culture and sports.
In his motivation, Prof. Tomov states his ambition to restore the legitimate weight of the institution: "I want to return the legitimate power of the Bulgarian president – as the bearer of the strategy, as a guarantor and representative of the nation's unity, as the country's representative in international relations, and as commander-in-chief of the armed forces." He categorically opposes attempts to make the head of state dependent on party interests, defining such practices as a gross violation of the fundamental law of the Republic of Bulgaria. His platform focuses on accelerating economic growth and raising incomes above the average European levels, which he sees as the only way to stop the process of decline and disappearance of the Bulgarian nation.
The candidate expresses strong disagreement with attempts to manipulate the elections around a single specific candidate without a real clash of ideas. According to him, avoiding debates deprives citizens of their democratic rights and demotivates them. Prof. Tomov emphasizes that throughout his political life he has sought national consensus, and he believes that his accumulated experience will allow him to offer radically new solutions for uniting society around the major goals facing Bulgaria.
Alexander Tomov is an established politician and university professor, born in 1954 in Sofia. His academic journey includes:
- In 1974, he began his higher education at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE).
- In 1975, he continued his studies at the prestigious Saint Petersburg State University "M. Lomonosov".
His biography is marked by key moments in our recent history. On November 10, 1990, he was elected as a member of the 7th Grand National Assembly of Bulgaria, and at the end of the same year, he took the post of Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria. Between 1991 and 1994, he participated in the drafting of over 30 laws in the economic sphere, with the highlight of his work being his participation in the creation of the new Bulgarian Constitution. Over the last 30 years, he has published 14 monographs and over 150 works analyzing the transition and global changes in the world. As the founder of "Bulgarian Social Democracy – EuroLeft", he has been repeatedly elected as its leader.
The organization of the vote follows a strict schedule:
- In July, Parliament set October 25 as the date for the presidential elections; the decision was published in the "State Gazette".
- On August 13, the Central Election Commission adopted a timeline for holding the vote.
- Last week, the Council of Ministers adopted a decision on the preparation and holding of the elections for President and Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
