Bulgaria's budget deficit is 4% of output, according to new Eurostat calculations. It was first reported at 3.5%.

The finance ministry said the gap comes mostly from road repair costs that were not booked in the accounts.

The ministry warned that the higher deficit will also affect state budgets in the coming years.

The legal limit for the deficit is 3%, and the country is already under an excessive deficit procedure.
