Russia attacked Ukraine with 176 attack drones overnight into Friday, 23 October. At least two people were hurt in Sumy, and a DTEK energy site was hit in Odesa region, the Air Force said. By 8:00 am, air defences had shot down or jammed 140 of the drones.
What flew at Ukraine
Russia used Shahed drones, 92 of them jet-powered, along with Gerbera and Parodiya decoy drones. They were launched from Bryansk, Shatalovo, Oryol, Kursk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, from occupied Donetsk and from Gvardeyskoye in Crimea.
Of the 140 drones shot down or jammed, 68 were jet-powered. Even so, enemy weapons hit 19 sites, and debris fell on 13 others.
Russia has fought a full-scale war against Ukraine since February 2022. Cities and the power grid are among the targets in almost every night attack.
Sumy
Drones hit civilian sites in three parts of the city. Some reached their targets, and homes were also damaged in the Kovpakivskyi district.
Oleh Hryhorov, head of the regional military administration, said on Telegram that at least two people were hurt. Their condition is being established, medics are treating them at the scene, and crews are still clearing up after the strike.
Odesa region
Russian forces hit an energy site of DTEK Odesa Electric Networks, civilian infrastructure in the south of the region and a recreation area. The fires are out.
Regional governor Oleh Kiper said there were no reports of injuries.
Separately, DTEK said Russian forces heavily shelled one of its thermal power plants. The plant has stopped producing power, and its equipment is badly damaged. The company said its plants have come under attack more than 230 times since the full-scale invasion began. The statement did not say where the plant is.
