A key working meeting dedicated to the tourism potential of Velingrad was held with the participation of leading regional and national institutional factors. Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh emphasized the need for joint efforts to promote the destination and overcome existing challenges.
During the forum, numerous strategic issues were discussed, including infrastructure improvement, staff qualification, and marketing approaches to attract more tourists. Participants in the meeting included Mayor Dr. Kostadin Koev, Regional Governor Valentina Kaytazova, Member of Parliament Dafinka Semerdzhieva, representatives of local businesses and educational institutions.
Minister Borshosh underlined the exceptional importance of partnership between the state and local authorities. "Our priority is the active development of tourist regions through targeted support and marketing strategies," he said to those present.
Specific topics of discussion included the possibilities of turning the narrow-gauge railway into an attractive tourist destination, the potential for branding Velingrad, and improving transport accessibility to the resort.
Statistical data show an impressive growth in the tourism sector - over 148 thousand visitors were registered in the first five months of 2025, and for the past 2024 year, the number exceeded 340 thousand. Over 67% of tourists preferred high-class 4 and 5-star hotels.
A key challenge remains extending tourists' stay, attracting foreign visitors, and diversifying the tourism offering. The minister defined medical tourism as strategically important for the region's development.
Representatives of local businesses and associations expressed readiness for in-depth cooperation with state institutions. They emphasized the need to improve professional training and create partnerships with tourism schools.
"Velingrad has an exceptional potential to attract ten times more tourists than its own population," Minister Borshosh was categorical. He stressed that the future of tourism is linked to infrastructure modernization, service quality, and trained personnel.
In conclusion, the minister sent a message to young people: "Our common goal is to create conditions for them to stay, work, and build their families in Bulgaria".
The meeting reinforced the state's commitment to sustainable development of the tourism sector and support for local communities.
