The initiative committee of the presidential ticket of Andrey Gyurov and Georgi Kandev has appealed to the Supreme Administrative Court. It is challenging a ruling by the Central Election Commission (CEC) that Prime Minister Rumen Radev did not break the law when he called on people to vote for Iliana Yotova. The court has yet to rule.
The committee filed its first complaint about the statement on Monday, after the Council of Ministers press office put it out. On Tuesday, the CEC was informed of 72 complaints.
The previous development: 72 complaints filed with election commission over Radev's statement backing Yotova
Radev called for support for Yotova, who is running for president with Kiril Valchev, the day after the first round of the election. There are now more than 100 complaints over the case.
The CEC ruled last night after a meeting that lasted nearly 8 hours. It said the call came before the campaign for the coming run-off had started, so it was not an administrative breach. Some commission members did not agree that it was campaigning and pointed to the same period.
"My view as rapporteur is that there is no breach," the rapporteur on the case told the meeting.
Radev spoke about the issue in parliament and said the call does not break the Electoral Code. "When does the campaign start, what period were we in then, did you take that into account?" the prime minister asked.
