Crackdown on underage e-scooter riders in Burgas

The parents of three 14-year-old boys were issued fines of 250 euros each after their children were caught riding electric scooters. The incident took place on July 1, following a report to the Municipality of Burgas regarding a group of minors in a schoolyard.

The law is categorical: individuals under the age of 16 are not permitted to operate individual electric vehicles (IEVs).

When a violation by a minor is identified, the responsibility falls directly on their guardians. This is the second such case in the coastal city in recent weeks, raising questions about parental control and road safety.

Statistics and measures by the Municipality

Data from the Municipality of Burgas shows a significant increase in violations:

  • 61 e-scooter riders fined since the beginning of June.
  • 47 cyclists sanctioned for riding in unauthorized areas.
  • Dozens of daily reports of dangerous riding.

The Municipality of Burgas is pushing for the urgent adoption of an ordinance for the mandatory registration of electric scooters. According to local authorities, this is the only effective way to identify offenders, as the maneuverability of the vehicles makes them difficult for law enforcement to stop and poses a risk to pedestrians.
