The National Assembly unanimously adopted amendments to the Ministry of Interior Act, which expand the powers of the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP). The institution will now be able to independently issue orders for the removal and blocking of access to terrorist content on the internet.

Key highlights of the legislative changes:

  • Counter-terrorism: GDBOP will report annually to the European Commission on the measures taken against online content of a terrorist nature.
  • Border security: The Border Police is receiving new tools to counter threats from unmanned aerial vehicles and stricter control in airport zones.
  • International cooperation: The International Operational Cooperation Directorate is established as a central hub for the exchange of information between law enforcement agencies in the EU.
"The goal is to accelerate investigations and synchronize with the European legal framework in order to avoid sanctions," emphasized Todor Barbolov from "Progressive Bulgaria".

During the debates, Daniel Mitov (GERB-SDS) emphasized the need for a clear boundary between the political leadership of the Ministry of Interior and professional investigation to ensure the independence of the officers.
