People who want to attend the ceremony for the remains of Tsar Samuil on October 3, 2026, will be able to travel to Sofia and back for free. The state rail operator BDZ – Passenger Services will cover the cost.
Passengers from Burgas can board train No. 3620 at 5:25 am. It reaches Sofia at 11:25 am. The return trip leaves the same day on train No. 3625 at 4:45 pm, arriving in Burgas at 10:40 pm.
Special trains for the event will also run from other parts of the country. From Plovdiv, train No. 1612 leaves at 8:10 am and arrives in Sofia at 10:55 am, with the return on train No. 1621 leaving Sofia at 4:25 pm and reaching Plovdiv at 7:05 pm. From Gorna Oryahovitsa, train No. 2640 departs at 5:20 am and reaches Sofia North at 9:12 am, returning on train No. 2641 at 4:50 pm and arriving back at 8:43 pm. From Petrich, train No. 5610 leaves at 6:00 am and arrives in Sofia at 10:19 am, while train No. 5615 returns from Sofia at 4:30 pm and reaches Petrich at 8:25 pm. From Vidin, train No. 7621 leaves at 4:50 am and arrives at 10:01 am, while train No. 7624 departs Sofia at 5:15 pm and reaches Vidin at 10:31 pm.
Tickets are round-trip only, with a fixed return date on the day of the ceremony, and are valid only for these specific trains, with a reserved seat. They can be bought at any station in the country, and the only cost is the seat reservation, which is 0.51 euros per direction.
In Sofia, the free tickets are valid to and from Central Station, Poduyane, Iskar, Zaharna Fabrika, Gorna Banya, Sofia North, Iskarsko Shose and the Gorna Banya stop. Other stops along the route are charged at the regular fare.
Online sales for these trains are suspended from October 1 to 3 inclusive, as well as for tickets on the same trains on other dates, though ticket counters are working as normal. BDZ said the suspension is needed to manage the issuing of free tickets and apologized for the inconvenience.
