Over 13 km of underground cable lines are now a reality near the Burgas lakes

As part of the large-scale environmental project "LIFE Safe Grid for Burgas", the company "Electrodistribution South" (part of EVN) reports significant progress. Over 13 km of underground cable lines, three new transformer stations, and a junction station have already been constructed.

"By removing dangerous overhead sections, we eliminate the risk of collision and electric shock for birds migrating along the Via Pontica route," the project team shares.

Why is the project key for nature?

The Burgas lakes area is one of the most significant migratory routes for birds in Europe. The project aims to protect species in four zones of the "NATURA 2000" network by:

  • Underground installation of 52 km of overhead power lines.
  • Insulating dangerous elements on the electrical infrastructure.
  • Installing special devices to improve the visibility of the wires.

Scope of measures

The activities are focused around key wetlands, including Atanasovsko Lake, Burgas Lake (Vaya), the "Poda" protected area, the Mandra complex, and Pomorie Lake. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and is funded through the European Union's LIFE program.
