Balaklava, a strategic area in occupied Crimea, is becoming the epicenter of a potential archaeological catastrophe. The local occupation authorities are planning a large-scale construction project that threatens an extremely valuable historical site with proven scientific value.
The area gained archaeological fame in 1992 when a significant numismatic complex of Roman monetary units was discovered. Subsequent extensive studies until 2013 revealed exceptional structures, including a well-preserved Roman fort and a rare sanctuary dedicated to Jupiter Dolichenus.
Experts documented unique elements of the ancient settlement, including a triple defensive trench that provides exceptional evidence of the Roman garrison's military infrastructure. The archaeological finds are so significant that they have received international recognition in scientific circles.
Despite the scientific value, occupation authorities have divided the terrain into construction plots, with part of the territory already excavated by private investors. This unprecedented act has caused a sharp reaction among Ukrainian scientists and the international cultural community.
